(CNN) -- Those looking forward to seeing Beyonce tackle the lead in a remake of "A Star is Born" were greeted with bad news on Wednesday, as it looks like the superstar is out of the project.

Trade publication Variety cites sources who say that Beyonce's schedule is already hectic, and the lack of a definitive start date was taking a toll on her ability to coordinate her schedule.

The "Star is Born" remake was first announced in January 2011, with Beyonce signing on for the role of the young starlet, as previously portrayed by Barbra Streisand.

Clint Eastwood is serving as director, and screenwriter Will Fetters ("The Lucky One") has been charged with the remake's script. But the lead male role, that of an older actor, has yet to be filled.

Variety reports that production was initially stalled because of Beyonce's pregnancy, and Eastwood took advantage of the break to work on September's "Trouble with the Curve."

Now that Eastwood's missing both a female and a male lead, the latter role looks to be the higher priority. Director Eastwood is said to have chatted up a number of actors for that part, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper.
