The kids are alright.

Amanda Gorman made history in 2021 as the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history, performing at President Joe Biden’s 59th inauguration when she was just 22 years old. Since then, the national poet laureate has written several books, forayed into the fashion world, and received abundant support from world changers like Michelle Obama.

She even sat down with Oprah Winfrey virtually for a special Apple TV talk in 2021 about her history-making inauguration appearance and wrote a poem for the television icon’s 70th birthday. However, the two had never met in person until this week at the Democratic National Convention (DNC), sharing a sweet exchange just after Gorman took the stage.

“It’s so good to see you,” Winfrey said while walking over to Gorman before the two shared a kiss on the cheek.

After embracing, Gorman said, “Can you believe we haven’t met in person?!”

Mouth agape, an astonished Oprah was shocked, holding Gorman’s hands while confirming for cameras, “This is our first time meeting in person?!”

The two had connected so many times over the years, virtually and on the phone, that Winfrey herself didn’t even realize they’d never actually met face to face.

The fact left Winfrey speechless.

“It’s crazy, right?!,” said Gorman before the two embraced again.

“I can’t believe it. You were so great. I’m so proud of you,” said Winfrey.

Gorman admitted she was a little nervous, which was another fun fact that took Winfrey by surprise.

She continued to encourage the young poet, and in between hugs, the two shared a sweet and heartfelt exchange backstage at the DNC. Watch the heartwarming moment below!
