Mayor Potter to Deliver Keynote at Kelly Lunch

Mayor Tom Potter will be the keynote speaker at the annual Neil Kelly Day Awards Luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 12, in the Doubletree Hotel at Lloyd Center.

For the ninth year, the Albina Rotary Foundation and the Northeast Business Alliance have teamed up to raise funds for the 2006 Neil Kelly Memorial Scholarship program.

Named to honor the late community leader and remodeler, the program awards four single-year $1,000 college scholarships to deserving North/Northeast high school seniors who show strong academic skills but also demonstrate service to their school, family and community.

"We want to support success in college and later life," said Tom Jenkins, Rotary District Governor-elect. "While we require a 2.75 GPA, our greatest interest is to receive applications from students who have a real need and show strong character and proven dedication to their community."

The scholarships are funded from earnings of an endowment fund. The long-term goal is to fund four renewable scholarships that would follow a student through a four-year college education. To do that, the organization continues to need financial help.

"We are asking community leaders and local businesses for financial support to increase the endowment," Jenkins said. "And, we would like them to show personal support by joining us as the 2006 scholarships are presented to four deserving students on May 12."
